America's entanglement with Israel

The Luck of the Israelis — Ambassador’s son missed 9/11 WTC rendezvous

Larry Silverstein and his two children weren’t the only ones with powerful Israeli connections to have had a lucky escape on September 11. Writing in the Jewish Daily Forward that “Israel felt pain of 9/11 terror attacks with New Yorkers,” Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., Michael Oren, recounts how his teenage son about to enter the Israel Defense Forces — whom his “sleepless” father had sent to stay with relatives in New York to protect him from the suicide bombings in Jerusalem in the summer of 2001 — had a very close call on 9/11:

On September 8, Yoav met his friends on the top the north tower. Dazzled by the vista, they agreed to rendezvous there again on the morning of the 11th. Yoav was still sleeping, fortunately, when his cousin awakened him with the news. From the roof of her apartment, he watched as both towers collapsed. My wife and I frantically tried to phone him, but the international lines were down. Hours passed before we finally reached him, weeping from the horror he had witnessed.

Presumably, Yoav Oren’s friends also had the good fortune to be still sleeping when the World Trade Center was struck that fateful morning. His father doesn’t say what happened to them, however. Perhaps, like the ambassador’s son did on his return to Israel, they too joined an elite IDF unit.
