AFRICOM: From the gang who brought us the Iraq war (and the coming one on Syria)

with 4 comments

In a recent article, Steve Horn traces Obama’s decision to send 100 Joint Special Operations Command forces to Uganda to “remove from the battlefield” the leaders of the Lord’s Resistance Army to a now-defunct but egregiously influential think tank:

AFRICOM, though, did not come out of the blue and was years in the making before its realization. Not long after 9/11, in early January 2002, a key symposium titled “African Oil: A Priority for U.S. National Security and African Development” took place in Washington, DC; it was hosted by the neoconservative think-tank, the Institute for Advanced Strategic and Political Studies (IASPS).

IASPS is most famous for its authorship of a paper called “A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm,” a 1996 paper that, among other things, called for the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, foreshadowing the 2003 invasion of Iraq by the neoconservative-lead [sic] Bush administration foreign policy team.

At the symposium, then Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Walter Kantsteiner III, stated, “African oil is a national strategic interest…[and] it’s people like you who will…bring the oil home.”

Horn’s article is well worth reading in full, but trust a well-funded progressive/liberal media outlet like AlterNet to obscure a key source of America’s “global war on terror” by describing an Israeli-based and extreme Zionist think tank as “neoconservative.”

  1. When one examines the “Clean Break” paper oil does not jump out as the primary focus. Outside of obscuring the Zionist Israeli think tank as “neoconservative” Alternet is throwing oil front and center as a diversion.

The “clean break” is not a break from oil relations but from existing Israeli/Arab relations.

As James Petras has discovered after exhaustive search there is no record of oil industry leaders or publications having called for the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. What we see here would seem to be Zionists attempting to sell oil as a rationale for pro-Israel policy.

  3. Absolutely correct.

It’s also worth noting, however, that Nat Rothschild’s Valleres looks set to benefit from the break-up of Iraq through the recent merger with Genel which has stakes in two world-scale producing oil fields, a major gas discovery and significant exploration acreage, all in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

As for Uganda, Rafi Eitan isn’t there just to raise cattle.
