At the end of September, Benjamin Netanyahu came to New York with a cartoonish diagram in order to portray Iran’s non-existent nuclear weapons program as a ticking time bomb that threatens the future of civilization. Invoking memories of the September 11 attacks on that city eleven years earlier — which at the time he intimated would be “very good” to generate American sympathy for his nation’s war on its regional enemies — the Israeli Prime Minister told the UN General Assembly:

To understand what the world would be like with a nuclear-armed Iran, just imagine the world with a nuclear-armed Al-Qaeda.

Meanwhile, the notorious Islamophobe Pamela Geller has just announced the purchase of all the clocks in NYC subway stations for her “new jihad awareness quran ad.” The advertisements depict the burning twin towers on 9/11 next to an excerpt of a verse from the Islamic holy book: “Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers.”

On her Atlas Shrugs blog, Geller explains:

I love this buy…for so many reasons. First, because metaphorically it’s so powerful. The clock is ticking, from a civilizational point of view. Bombs, at least in movies, tick and are set off by clocks. The urgency of our message is mirrored in the placement.

Apart from their shared devotion to Zionism and a penchant for apocalyptic hyperbole, one might think that an Israeli prime minister and a disreputable American blogger would not have much in common. But in their joint strategic manipulation of information to sustain a Manichaean narrative of a world facing an imminent threat from “modern” Israel’s “medieval” foes, there is little difference between the leader of the self-defined Jewish state and its well-funded New York-based provocateur.
